The Swisher ESP (Emergency – Security – Preparedness) Safety Shelter is designed to provide ultimate multi-purpose protection and security for you and your loved ones against the devastating effects of natural disasters and various man-made threats. Manufactured in the USA, these above-ground shelters are engineered to withstand the most extreme tornado activity and offer a safe haven against home invasions.
The internal dimensions of the shelter are 80"L x 35"W x 76"H, while the external dimensions are 87"L x 42"W x 78"H, accommodating up to 6 persons. To cater to growing families, additional Expansion Kits are available that can increase the depth of the shelter from 39" to 54", 84", 114", and 144".
Constructed from 3/16" (0.188") thick carbon steel with Grade 5 hardware, the majority of the shelter's surfaces are powder-coated for ultimate protection and appearance. The door design and materials used are critical components, and the Swisher ESP Safety Shelter features a unique sliding reinforced steel door that eliminates the common issues associated with inward and outward swinging doors.
When opened, the sliding door takes up no additional space inside or outside the shelter, and because it does not open outward, the likelihood of being trapped by debris after an event is greatly reduced or eliminated. A Security Grade Deadbolt holds the latch bar in the locked position, and three steel pins securely lock the door closed within a 3" deep steel jamb pocket.
The ESP Safety Shelter's design also includes a 4th locking pin that can only be installed and removed from the inside. Even if the security deadbolt is damaged from the outside, this pin ensures the door will never open unless the inhabitants remove it. A single handle operation locks all three pins into place in a single motion, eliminating the need to waste precious time trying to lock multiple deadbolts.
The shelter's door is not solely reliant on hinges to support and secure it to the hinge jamb. When the door is in the closed position, the entire hinge side (top to bottom) is locked into the adjacent front wall, eliminating the risk of screws pulling out or pins breaking.
Shielded air vents allow for uninterrupted air flow, and the quick-release sliding door design facilitates opening when blocked by debris, while also reducing the space required for operation. The shelter also features emergency panels for rapid exit and a security-grade latch/key lock.
Designed as a DIY project, the Swisher ESP Safety Shelter's modular bolt-together construction ensures ease of installation and relocation. Upon completion, the shelter must be inspected by a qualified professional, and the NSSA (National Storm Shelter Association) type 4 seal and a Certificate of Installation will be provided to the customer.
The Swisher ESP Safety Shelter has undergone rigorous testing at the National Wind Institute at Texas Tech University, withstanding a total of nine impacts from 15-pound 2x4s traveling at 100 mph, equivalent to the force produced by an F5 tornado with 250-mph winds. These shelters have been verified by the NSSA to be in compliance with FEMA 320, FEMA 361, and the ICC-500-2014 Code requirements.
